Boothside: How Spidling Productions Is Building a Lasting Children's Brand

John Eaton shares why stories matter more than products, how Spidling Productions is building original IP, and why trust is the foundation of every successful brand.

Boothside: How Spidling Productions Is Building a Lasting Children's Brand

In a market full of products competing for attention, Spidling Productions has taken a different approach. Rather than starting with merchandise, the company began by creating memorable characters, engaging stories and educational experiences designed to inspire children and families.

At the heart of the business is Spid the Spider—a character created not just to entertain, but to encourage confidence, kindness, resilience and a lifelong love of reading.

For this edition of Boothside – Beyond The Booth, we spoke with John Eaton, founder of Spidling Productions, about building original intellectual property, the future of creativity, and why memorable brands are built on far more than products.

About John Eaton

John Eaton is the founder of Spidling Productions, a children's entertainment and educational company based in Taunton, England. Through original stories, songs, educational resources and characters, John's mission is to create engaging experiences that inspire children while encouraging learning through fun.

Many brands start with a product, but Spidling Productions started with stories and characters. Do you think consumers ultimately buy products, or do they buy stories and emotions?

Ultimately, people buy the difference a product makes to their lives.

Stories and emotions are a powerful part of that because they're what people remember long after they've put a product down.

With Spid the Spider, every story is designed to leave children smiling while giving them something valuable to take away—whether that's confidence, kindness, resilience, problem-solving or simply a love of reading.

Parents and teachers are looking for resources that entertain while also encouraging conversation and learning.

That's why we started with characters and stories. If children genuinely care about Spid and his friends, they'll want to read another story, sing another song and enjoy another adventure.

Helping children develop a love of reading and confidence in learning really is a gift that keeps giving.

Original IP takes years to build. How do you stay true to your creative vision while remaining commercially relevant?

Original characters don't become trusted brands overnight. Building them takes patience, consistency and determination.

Our creative vision began with one simple belief from the very beginning: children learn best when they're having fun.

Every creative decision starts with a simple question: "Will this genuinely benefit children?"

We work closely with parents, teachers, illustrators, musicians and other creative partners to make every story, song and activity as engaging as possible.

Rather than chasing every trend, we focus on timeless moments like birthdays, Christmas, Halloween and school holidays. Children's needs don't change as quickly as social media does.

Families will always value humour, imagination, memorable characters and positive life lessons.

Has the gift industry become too focused on products and not focused enough on building memorable brands?

The gift industry is wonderfully creative, but it's also highly fragmented. Many excellent products appear for a season and then disappear.

Building an enduring brand is a long-term investment.

We're not simply producing books or gifts—we're creating a children's entertainment and learning experience.

Every new story expands the Spid universe through books, songs, educational resources, videos and, increasingly, animation and licensing.

When people recognise a character they trust, every new product builds on that relationship.

Where do you find most of your customers and retail buyers today?

Today's marketplace is far more connected than it was even a decade ago.

Trade shows remain incredibly valuable because nothing replaces face-to-face conversations and seeing products in person.

At the same time, digital channels allow us to build direct relationships with families, teachers and retailers through our website, social media, videos and free educational resources.

For us, traditional and digital channels work together rather than competing with one another.

If you had just five minutes with a retail buyer, what's the one thing you'd want them to understand before looking at a single product?

Everything begins with the customer.

Our goal is to create gifts that children love receiving, parents value buying and grandparents enjoy giving.

Every creative decision asks the same question:

"How does this improve the experience for children, parents, teachers and ultimately retailers?"

Retailers don't simply need products.

They need products that customers trust and come back for.

What's the biggest misconception about turning creativity into a successful commercial brand?

Many people think having one great idea is enough.

In reality, successful brands are built through thousands of small improvements, continual learning and a genuine understanding of customers.

Creativity starts the journey.

Persistence, collaboration and consistently delivering quality are what transform an idea into a trusted brand.

Artificial intelligence is transforming creative industries. What do you think genuine creativity will mean over the next five years?

Artificial intelligence is already becoming an extraordinary creative partner, and it will undoubtedly help creators develop ideas more quickly.

But ideas alone don't create meaningful brands.

Real creativity comes from curiosity, empathy, experience and making unexpected connections.

AI can generate possibilities, but people still decide which ideas have heart, humour and lasting value.

Technology may change how stories are created, but it won't change why people love them.

Lovable characters, inspiring stories and genuine human connection will always remain at the heart of lasting brands.

Key Takeaways

  • Stories create emotional connections that last longer than products alone.

  • Successful intellectual property is built through patience and consistency.

  • Trade shows and digital marketing work best together.

  • Great brands start by understanding the customer.

  • Creativity may evolve with AI, but human connection will always matter.

Building a successful brand takes far more than a great product. As John Eaton explains, lasting brands are created through meaningful stories, memorable characters and a genuine understanding of the people they're designed for. While technology, retail channels and consumer habits continue to evolve, the fundamentals remain the same: create something people trust, deliver real value, and build relationships that last.
