Snoop founder Pollyanna shares how she discovers new brands, what makes products stand out, and why relationships matter more than price in independent retail.

Trade Talks Tuesday: Why Discovery Still Matters in Independent Retail – Insights from Pollyanna, Founder of Snoop
Independent retailers have never had more choice. New brands launch every day, trends move faster than ever, and customers are constantly looking for something they haven't seen before.
For this edition of Trade Talks Tuesday, we spoke with Pollyanna, founder of Snoop, an award-winning independent gift shop in Shrewsbury, about curating a distinctive retail experience, discovering new brands, and why relationships matter more than hard selling.
About Snoop
Founded by Pollyanna, Snoop is an independent gift and lifestyle store in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. Drawing on more than 15 years' experience in retail and visual merchandising, Pollyanna created Snoop as a colorful, joyful space filled with carefully curated gifts, homeware, stationery, accessories and independent brands that inspire curiosity and happiness.

Snoop has such a clear visual identity. When you're sourcing new products, how important is it that a brand fits the personality of your shop?
It's absolutely essential.
I've worked hard to inject something new and different into Shrewsbury, so every product has to feel like it belongs in the Snoop world (aka my head).
I'm drawn to brands that bring color, personality and a sense of joy. It's less about following trends and more about finding pieces that make people smile and fit naturally alongside everything else stocked here.

As an independent retailer, what makes you stop and pay attention to a new brand when you're browsing at trade shows, online, or on social media?
Strong branding and beautiful photography!
Originality is a big one. If something makes me stop scrolling or I find myself wanting to know more, that's usually a good sign.
I also love products that feel like a discovery, something customers might not have seen everywhere else or perhaps are not even stocked in the UK right now.

What are customers coming into Snoop looking for right now?
A bit of everything, but joyful treats are definitely leading the way—who doesn't love a little pick-me-up?
There's also always an appetite for unexpected finds, those products people didn't know they needed until they spotted them, or the items with "no use" that sit perfectly amongst a collection of other like-minded pieces on a well-curated shelf.
Snoop's products feel very giftable but also very personal. What makes a product an easy "yes" for gifting?
It needs to feel special without being overly complicated.
Good gifting products tell a story, evoke a memory or simply make people happy.
They should feel thoughtful and have enough personality that someone instantly thinks, "That's so them."
A touch of humor, beautiful design and great quality always help too.
How much does packaging influence your buying decisions?
I'm a firm believer that the art of receiving a gift is all in the opening and how it's packaged.
Customers often make snap decisions, so products need to catch the eye straight away. Great packaging creates excitement and helps tell the brand story before someone even picks the item up.
That said, the product itself still has to deliver. Beautiful packaging might spark interest, but substance keeps customers coming back.
What role do trade shows still play compared with discovering brands online?
I'm not a huge trade show goer, in all honesty.
They do help with meeting the people behind the screen and seeing products in person. However, because I try to find brands and products that aren't already stocked locally, online is often the best place for discovery—especially for keeping up with new launches and smaller makers.
If a brand is approaching Snoop for the first time, what should they absolutely do—and what should they avoid?
Do your homework.
Understand the kind of products we already stock and find out the business owner's or buyer's name. A personal approach goes a long way.
Great imagery, clear pricing and a concise introduction are all appreciated.
What should they avoid? Generic mass emails that have clearly been sent to hundreds of shops. I also prefer brands not to lead with pressure or endless follow-ups.

Many suppliers believe price is the biggest factor in winning business. In your experience, how true is that?
Price does matter where Snoop is situated, but it's rarely the deciding factor.
Product quality, originality, branding and how well something fits our customers are all just as important.
Customers are happy to invest in products that feel special, so we're looking for value rather than simply the cheapest option.

Key Takeaways
Independent retailers curate products that reflect the personality of their shop, not simply current trends.
Strong branding and high-quality photography are often what make a buyer stop and take notice.
Today's customers are looking for joyful, unexpected products that tell a story and feel personal.
Packaging creates the first impression, but product quality is what drives repeat purchases.
Online discovery is becoming increasingly important for retailers looking to find unique brands and emerging makers.
Personalized outreach and genuine relationship-building are far more effective than generic sales emails.
Buyers look for value, originality and brand fit—not simply the lowest price.
As Pollyanna's insights demonstrate, independent retail is built on thoughtful curation and genuine relationships. For brands looking to stand out, success isn't about reaching every retailer—it's about finding the right retailers, telling a compelling story, and creating products that people genuinely want to discover.
