Trade Talks Tuesday: Building a Purpose-Driven Brand – Insights from Emma, Founder of Sunshine Lane

Today's consumers aren't simply buying products—they're looking for brands with meaning.

Whether it's wellbeing, storytelling or creating genuine emotional connections, purpose has become one of the biggest differentiators in the gift industry.

For this edition of Trade Talks Tuesday, we spoke with Emma, founder of Sunshine Lane, about the rise of wellbeing gifting, building an authentic brand, and why trade shows remain one of the most powerful ways for independent businesses to grow.

About Sunshine Lane

Founded by Emma and inspired by both her background in Social Work and her mother's career as a registered Mental Health Nurse, Sunshine Lane creates award-winning greeting cards, stationery and gifts that combine thoughtful design with genuine wellbeing principles.

Winner of a prestigious Gift of the Year Award, the family-run brand is dedicated to creating products that spark joy, encourage self-reflection and help people prioritize their mental wellbeing.

Wellness has become one of the fastest-growing categories in gifting. Why do you think consumers are prioritizing wellbeing products?

The world can honestly feel exhausting.

Between the pace of modern life, competing priorities and constant digital overload, people are actively looking for moments of calm.

Through my own experiences with chronic health issues and a late Autism diagnosis, I learned that intentional self-care isn't a luxury—it's a necessity.

Consumers are increasingly looking for products that help them pause, protect their mental wellbeing and feel a little lighter.

Do you think consumers are looking for gifts with a more meaningful purpose?

Absolutely.

Decorative gifts are lovely, but what better gift can you give someone than something that uplifts them or encourages them to focus on themselves for a moment?

Consumers increasingly want gifts that have a lasting positive impact rather than simply creating a brief moment of novelty.

How important is emotion in purchasing decisions today?

Emotion is everything.

At its heart, gifting is about human connection.

Even during challenging economic times, people still want to make loved ones feel seen, understood and cared for.

Sunshine Lane has built a brand around purpose as well as product. How important is purpose today?

Purpose is absolutely vital.

Consumers quickly recognize the difference between authentic brands and marketing messages.

Our products come from a genuine desire to help people feel understood.

Having a clear purpose also keeps us focused as a business. Rather than chasing every trend, it helps us make decisions that remain authentic to who we are and what we want Sunshine Lane to represent.

What role do trade shows play in helping independent brands grow?

Trade shows have opened doors for us that simply wouldn't have existed otherwise.

When we exhibited for the first time, I measured success purely by the number of orders.

Now, after eight trade shows, I've realized that's only part of the picture.

They allow buyers to follow your journey and see how your business evolves year after year.

What advice would you give to brands exhibiting for the first time?

Make sure your stand reflects your brand.

At our first exhibition, our products were colorful and full of personality, but our stand was very plain. There was a disconnect that made it harder for buyers to immediately understand who we were.

I'd also encourage brands to market themselves before the event.

Retailers often arrive with a shortlist of stands they want to visit, so making sure you're on that list before the doors open can make a huge difference.

How important is storytelling when presenting your brand?

It's one of the most important parts.

Product quality, pricing and margins all matter, but our strongest retail partnerships have always come from buyers who truly understand why we do what we do.

When retailers believe in your story, they naturally share that enthusiasm with their customers—and that's where lasting relationships begin.

What's the biggest lesson you've learned while growing Sunshine Lane?

Probably adopting the mindset of "Why not us?"

It's easy to convince yourself that you're not experienced enough or not established enough.

Winning Gift of the Year completely changed that perspective.

Sometimes the biggest barrier isn't the market—it's your own self-belief.

Key Takeaways

  • Consumers increasingly seek gifts that support wellbeing and create emotional connections.

  • Purpose-driven brands build stronger relationships with both customers and retailers.

  • Storytelling helps retailers understand not only what a product is, but why it matters.

  • Trade shows create lasting brand recognition—not simply immediate orders.

  • Successful exhibitors invest as much in their stand presentation and pre-show marketing as they do in their products.

  • Authenticity and resilience remain two of the most valuable assets when growing an independent brand.

Emma's journey highlights that building a successful gift brand isn't about following trends—it's about creating something meaningful, staying true to your purpose, and having the confidence to share your story with the world.
